Niels verkiest dat ik weinig woorden gebruik over zijn werk, maar hij vergeet hoe moeilijk kort schrijven is. Nochtans slaagt hij er zelf in om dat minimalisme in zijn beeldend werk te realiseren en dat kan niet gemakkelijk zijn. Maar dat is snel vergeten als men het kan en hij kan het. Parmenides en Heraclitus brengt hij tot onrustige stilstand in zijn werk: worden en zijn, in één beeld gebracht. Daarvoor zoekt hij de losse grond. Zwart verlaat het wit niet en het witte wordt niet zwart. Grijze schaduwen zijn niet voor op atelier.
Orde is verborgen chaos en chaos heeft haar eigen ritme. Het tweedimentionale verlangt naar een uitbreiding naar een derde (sculptuur, installatie), maar wil ook zichzelf blijven. Daarom houdt schilderkunst van de materie van haar eigen huid, die haar karakter toont, haar identiteit.

Het werk van Niels Ketelers valt op omwille van zijn zwart- wit contrasten en de originele manier waarop hij de, in dit land, vruchtbare tendens van de geometrische abstractie een persoonlijk elan geeft.
Aan de hand van discrete modules of vlakken bouwt hij verhoudingen op die, in hun strenge non-figuratie, toch gevoelig overkomen omdat zij, op verheven wijze, op elkaar inspelen, meditatief maar toch krachtig zijn, anders dan wat wij vaak in die tendens te zien krijgen en getuigend van een reëel inzicht in harmonieën en structuren.

Though he can be regarded as a visual artist, Niels Ketelers is just as much a composer. Music and its effect on the hearer form an essential part of his art. By working with the very same fundamentals that can be found in music, Niels wants his installations to generate an equally musical effect. As such, rhythm takes central place in his work, and forms a mathematical structure which is juxtaposed with the artist's emotional expressiveness. Likewise, Niels attempts to touch the same chords that are stuck when listening to music. Interestingly enough, the artist does not opt for more obvious forms - such as the figurative or the narrative - to reach this effect. Rhythm lies at the heart of his work and gets translated into mathematical structures and geometric forms.
This visual language can seem paradoxical, because the rationality with which mathematics and geometry structure the world is directly at odds with the effect Niels' art attempts to bring about. To him, however, it is precisely these structures that do not merely leave the spectator indifferent and thus elicit an emotional response.
By using simple materials and by employing the space in which the work is showcased, Niels transforms the working of sound into visuals. From geometric forms he distills a musical effect, but he just as much uses mathematics as a tool to express emotion.
